First held in 1947, the Edinburgh International Festival has grown into the world’s greatest celebration of art and culture. There really is something for everyone, with spin-off events of every genre including theatre, music, dance, cinema, comedy and street art taking place from June to September.

Combining performances by opera companies, ballet and contemporary dance ensembles, theatre groups and world premieres by the latest creative talents, this summer-long festival concludes with one of the world’s biggest pyrotechnic displays, when more than 400,000 fireworks explode above Edinburgh Castle, accompanied by a live symphony orchestra.
When to go: August
See some of the hottest names in jazz, blues and funk in seriously intimate venues. Free events include open-air Mardi Gras performances in the Grassmarket and the spectacular Carnival in Princes Street Gardens.
When to go: First two weeks in July
The Fringe celebrates both amateur and world-famous performers offering comedy, musicals, drama, dance and mind-bending performance art. The Pleasance Courtyard is a major hub of the Festival Fringe, with almost 30 venues hosting up to 250 shows each summer.
When to go: August
Enjoy screenings of classic films, arthouse productions, world premieres and special events at artsy venues around the city. With stars and directors taking part, it’s a great opportunity for celeb-spotting.
When to go: Last two weeks in June
The focus is on adventurous and challenging new work at this veritable feast for the eyes. Exhibitions take place at established galleries and at less conventional pop-ups in unexpected places, and most are free to visit.

There are more than 9,000 free shows held each year, all run by the Free Fringe, and the Royal Mile is packed with entertainers and musicians all summer long; they don’t charge, but they do hope for a tip. Or why not head up Calton Hill and watch the dazzling pyrotechnics of the Festival’s grand finale for free – and without being deafened.
